Apart from why Aikido is good for you, you're probably also interested in what makes our dojo and our association unique. It’s hard to describe this in words, so it’s better if you simply come by and get to know us. Nevertheless, we’d like to try and summarize what is important to us and how we practice in our dojo.

The word "dojo" directly translates to "place of the way." Its meaning goes far beyond that of a simple gymnasium. Richard Strozzi-Heckler has summed this up very well in the following text:

“In Japanese, the word ‘dojo’ describes the place where we practice the way. This implies two important aspects. First, that a dojo is a place of learning. But it’s not about purely academic learning; it’s about a knowledge gained through physical training in the body (...).

The second aspect relates to the syllable ‘do,’ which means ‘way.’ The origin of this word is in Sanskrit, where it means ‘place of awakening.’ The Japanese character for ‘do’ consists of two parts. On one side, it shows a man walking along a road. On the other side, it depicts the human throat, with the two carotid arteries symbolizing the core and pulse of life. A man who is walking toward life.friendly curiosity about life.”

The way is a theme of life. The dojo is the place where our bodies can awaken, the self can grow, and where we meet in spirit through physical training and friendly curiosity about life.”

In this sense, we treat our dojo as a place where we practice, grow, and learn together. This includes physical training as well as seminars that we organize for our members and guests, sitting together after training, and occasionally having a party.
As in some other dojos, our attitude towards the dojo and how and what we practice there is also expressed in our behavior. For example, we turn off our phones during practice, treat each other with respect and kindness, and aim to create a focused, attentive atmosphere.
